Start With the Analytical Question
Researchers may need to ask about molecular identity, chromatographic composition, component separation, molecular mass, stability or another material-specific property. The method should be chosen for the question.
Chromatographic Methods
HPLC can separate components under defined conditions and provide retention and peak-area information. Interpretation depends on column chemistry, mobile phase, gradient, detection and integration settings.
Mass-Spectrometric Methods
Mass spectrometry can provide mass-to-charge evidence useful for identity, adduct and fragmentation analysis. Complexes, modifications and multi-component formulations may require additional interpretation.
Orthogonal Evidence
Methods that answer different questions can strengthen a characterization strategy when their results are interpreted together. A chromatographic area percentage is not the same thing as molecular identity or net material quantity.
Identity-Specific Limits
Clinical-development findings apply to the specific investigational pharmaceutical formulation and protocol and should not be generalized to unrelated research materials or personal use.
